The joy of posterity, Christmas style

 


How can my heart not be filled with joy and gratitude? Behold our six treasures: Madison the sheep, Allison the donkey, Katelyn as Mary (great with child), Brandon the shepherd, Daxton the wise man, and Avery the angel. I #GiveThanks for the blessing of these little ones and the joy they bring to our lives as we see them grow and develop.

  There's a principle of persistence that applies to climbing mountains, but also to many other aspects of life. We all get tired, we "run out of gas," we get frustrated with delays, we despair of reaching our goal, we think the job will never end, we keep waiting for the weather to improve, we become frustrated with "enduring."   What do you see when you look at this photo? Well, it depends. For many of us, it's just a pretty photo of red cliffs against a pretty blue sky. But a photographer might see an opportunity to adjust aperture, f-stop, and ISO to optimize how he captures the scene. A geologist might see hundreds of millions of years of history, with sedimentary layers of sandstone and limestone and evidence of millenia of erosion. A rock climber might see several 5+ pitches and a number of intriguing potential climbing routes. A traveler might see similarities to formations previously viewed in Zion National Park. A painter might see a challenge to recreate the variety and subtleties of colors and shadows in the scene. A botanist might see a surrounding forest of juniper, pine, manzanita, and Arizona cypress. Sensory memories: juicy pear jelly bellies

  My mother was a fascinating woman, with a broad exposure to the world resulting from extensive and frequent travel. She knew all about various cultures, cuisines, and delicacies. In her later years, she had a series of strokes that made it difficult to remember and communicate. Her world shrank dramatically. I don't recall when she developed a liking for "jelly bellies" - those small, flavorful jelly beans. At some point, I started bringing them to her regularly, usually in the bag of multi-flavor assortments. If her supply ran low, she would remind me, "I need more of those - what are they? - bellies." That was all she remembered. So I would bring her more. She quickly developed a favorite, though. She was always delighted to come across the light green ones with dark green spots among the assortment.
